Ebey’s Landing National Historical Reserve was the first National Historical Reserve established in the United States, created in 1978. What makes it unique is that it isn’t a national park in the traditional sense. Instead, it is a partnership among farmers, residents, local governments, state agencies, and the National Park Service to protect more than 17,000 acres—nearly 27 square miles—of working farms, historic communities, and spectacular landscapes.

My lavender farm sat just inside the reserve’s boundary, though only by a little. The heart of the reserve, however, is the prairie stretching toward the sea, with the Olympic Mountains rising across the water. Rich soils have supported generations of farmers, many of whose families still work the land today.

This photograph captures several things that make Ebey’s so special: the bluff overlooking the prairie, the Olympic Mountains in the distance, the warm glow of the setting sun, and a farmer still working the fields as evening settles in. It’s a scene that speaks to both the beauty of the landscape and the enduring agricultural traditions that have shaped it for generations.
