Photography has been one of my constant companions for as long as I can remember. I started with a simple Brownie camera as a child and have been looking at the world through a lens ever since.
These photographs are more than images of beautiful places. They are moments that caught my attention while wandering beaches, hiking trails, working farms, city streets, gardens, and back roads. Some were taken close to home on Martha’s Vineyard and Whidbey Island. Others come from travels through Europe, North Africa, Australia, and beyond.
What draws me to a photograph is often the story behind it—a glacial pond hidden in the woods, a weathered farm overlooking a prairie, the play of light on water, or an unexpected pattern in nature.
Sometimes the story is thousands of years old. Sometimes it lasts only a few seconds before the light changes. My years as a farmer taught me to pay attention to seasons, weather, and the small details many people pass by.
Photography became a way to preserve those fleeting moments and share them with others. I hope these images encourage you to slow down, look a little closer, and discover the beauty, history, and wonder that surround us every day.

Lavender Painter

When I had the lavender farm on Whidbey Island many groups of painters would come and set up their easels and spend an afternoon painting. I have a couple of good photos of some of the, and this one is my favorite. Check out Lavender Painter — available as canvas prints, framed prints, phone cases,… Read more

Sunflowers and Peaches Still Life

This is a still life photo I made a my friend’s house in Hood River, OR. We bought the fruit and the flowers that day as we drove up towards Mt. Hood. She is a plein air painter who I admire, so we set this up and started to paint. I liked my photo better… Read more

South Beach, Martha’s Vineyard

The endless horizon of the south side of the island is mesmerizing. The relatively small footprints on the beach in the foreground show the vast difference between the Atlantic Ocean, and the temporary marks a mere human makes. Check out South Beach, Martha’s Vineyard — available as canvas prints, framed prints, phone cases, tote bags,… Read more

Duarte Pond Martha’s Vineyard

Martha’s Vineyard has a robust system of protecting land and making it available to the public for hiking and looking at views, and even sitting on the beach. Duarte Pond is included in the Blackwater Pond Reservation and is a wonderful spot all four seasons. In this photograph I was taken by the reflections of… Read more

Grey Day at Penn Cove

The waters of Penn Cove on Whidbey Island, WA are ever changing. This day, I was sitting at a meeting of the Coupeville Historic Waterfront Association when the muted grays insisted that I photograph them. Coupeville is the county seat of Island County (which includes Whidbey and Camano Islands) and yet it is a small… Read more

Layers of Olympic Mountains

I got lucky being a beginning farmer on Whidbey Island starting in 1999 and got to know several people farming land their families had farmed for generations. This image is taken from the property of one of those farmers, looking at the house of another. The poignant thing about this picture is what is missing.… Read more

Breaking Waves

While this image of waves breaking could have been taken on either of the islands I have called home, it was actually taken near Princetown, Victoria, Australia. I was taken with the idea that beyond these waves was Antarctica, plus they are simply beautiful. Check out Breaking Waves — available as canvas prints, framed prints,… Read more

Ebey’s Landing Farming with Mount Baker

Hiking up the trail at Ebey’s Landing you can look away from the water and see this view of the fields and Mt. Baker. In this field they had planted cabbage that farmers grow for the seed. Apparently, cabbage seed grown on Whidbey (and the Skagit Valley) is of excellent quality and they export it… Read more
